Updated Strategy for Digital Preservation at the National Library (NB)
The National Library (NLN) established its first digital preservation strategy in February 2024. Its purpose was to guide, structure, and sharpen the focus of our work on digital preservation for the period 2024–2025.
This has now been replaced by an updated strategy that will apply to the period 2026–2029.
The updated strategy is based on the same principles as the previous one. Predictability and clear direction remain essential in our work on digital preservation.
However, several adjustments have been made to further clarify the direction of our efforts.
The following changes have been incorporated into the updated digital preservation strategy at NLN:
The strategy period has been aligned with the timeframe of NB’s overarching organizational strategy.
The preservation strategy has been more closely linked to the organization’s strategic goals related to dissemination, research, and technological development.
A dedicated objective has been introduced focusing on ensuring data quality and investing in artificial intelligence (AI).
Considerations related to uncertainty and challenges associated with economic conditions and funding have been included.
An organizational aspect has been added, emphasizing continuous improvement through interdisciplinary teamwork.
Under strategic priority areas, a new point has been introduced to clarify NLN’s role as a preservation institution in relation to the archives, libraries, and museums (LAM) sector, as well as its role in national knowledge preparedness. This has been included as a direct consequence of Parliamentary Report No. 9 (2024–2025), Total Preparedness Report — Prepared for Crises and War. A key takeaway from this report is that arts and culture are now considered part of total preparedness. This means that culture, cultural heritage, and cultural actors are also recognized as important in times of crisis and war.
In addition, it has been important to ensure that the strategy document remains short and concise—so that it is actually being read and understood. Here is the new strategy.
